Gunther Abrahamson Research and Management Award

 1. Sponsored by the Caribou Management Scholarship Fund, which is maintained by the Beverly and Qamanirjuaq Caribou Management Board (BQCMB), this award is valued between $1,500 and $5,000. The award is offered to Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada enrolled in college or university pursuing studies that contribute to the understanding of barren-ground caribou and their habitat, or that would have application to caribou conservation and management. Students conducting traditional knowledge studies as well as scientific studies are encouraged to apply.

2. In making the selection for the awards, the Gunther Abrahamson Research and Management Award will take into account: individuals who normally reside in one of the communities on the range of the Beverly and Qamanirjuaq barren ground caribou herds; students furthering education/training in natural resources, preferably related to caribou; students who are conducting research on one or both of these caribou herds or their habitat; and students conducting research on barren ground caribou generally. Other considerations will be the quality of the application, potential benefit of the research, relevant experience and future aspirations, and the referee’s reports. The final amount of the award will be determined by the BQCMB based on the relevance and merits of the proposed work.

 3. The research may involve a northern fieldwork component that is conducted between May in the year the award is granted and the following May; however, fieldwork is not required for this particular award.

4. The award covers an eleven-month period of study. Payment will be issued in two installments and is to be used as stipend. Proof of registration and one progress report are required. First payment will be issued after proof of September registration is received.
